Read-Aloud Volunteer Orientation

East Bay children’s book author, Gary Soto was a featured speaker at the annual Read-Aloud Orientation and Training for new and returning volunteers, held on Tuesday, Sept 16, 2014.

Mr. Soto and his wife and co-presenter, Carolyn Oda, shared their experiences with story-telling and rituals for young children at the orientation and training.

Born in Fresno, California to Mexican-American parents, Gary Soto is an acclaimed poet, adult and children’s book writer. Several of his books have been translated into French, Spanish, Korean, and Italian. “Too Many Tamales” was named a Booklist Books for Youth Editors’ Choices of 1993. The Soto family lives in Berkeley, California. The Gary Soto Literary Museum opened at Fresno City College in February 2011.
